Syncfusion's Response to Xamarin’s End of Life A Comprehensive Plan

Syncfusion’s Response to Xamarin’s End of Life: A Comprehensive Plan

TLDR: Syncfusion responds to Xamarin’s end with .NET MAUI migration plan. Ensuring support until 2026, rebuilding controls, and offering extensive resources.

As we embark on the next chapter of cross-platform app development, we want to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to each developer who came with us on our Xamarin journey. Microsoft’s announcement of discontinuing Xamarin support from May 1, 2024, has left many developers pondering their next move. While apprehension is natural, .NET MAUI offers a path to a brighter future as Xamarin’s more advanced replacement.

In this blog, we’ll delve into the drawbacks of using Xamarin, how Syncfusion support is affected by these changes, and why it’s crucial to migrate from Syncfusion’s Xamarin controls to our  .NET MAUI suite.

Drawbacks of continuing with Xamarin

While Xamarin has been a reliable choice for cross-platform development, its end-of-support creates several drawbacks. As Xamarin reaches its retirement date, developers may encounter compatibility issues, security vulnerabilities, and a lack of new features and enhancements. Your apps won’t be supported with the latest Android, iOS, and iPadOS versions. Sticking with Xamarin could potentially hinder the growth and security of your apps in the long run.

Syncfusion support limitations

As Xamarin’s end of support is set for May 1, 2024, Syncfusion has established a support roadmap to aid customers during this transition phase. Typically, Syncfusion offers support for its release versions over several years, including one year of general availability and patching support, two years of extended support, and finally, two years of limited support. However, it’s important to note that this timeline differs for Xamarin controls, and we want to provide clear guidance to all our users.

Considering that Microsoft will cease providing security updates and new Android and iOS versions, we have offered general availability and patch support for one year until April 2025, followed by one additional year of limited support.

Why migrate to .NET MAUI?

The .NET MAUI (Multi-platform App UI) platform represents the next generation of cross-platform app development with .NET. It offers a unified framework for building native apps for multiple platforms, including iOS, Android, and Windows. Migrating to Syncfusion’s .NET MAUI ensures your apps stay modern, compatible, and future-proof.

Syncfusion’s plan for .NET MAUI

We’re excited to announce that we have delivered over 52 controls for .NET MAUI. This is proof of our commitment to providing robust tools for cross-platform development. We plan to deliver the remaining controls by our 2024 Volume 2 release, at which point we will fully match our Xamarin suite. The following controls will be delivered in Essential Studio 2024 Volume 1, which is planned for release at the end of March:

  • Chat
  • Parallax View
  • Polar and Radar Charts
  • Radial Menu
  • Rotator
  • Step Progress Bar
  • TreeMap

With nearly 70% of features already delivered across most components, we’re dedicated to achieving more than 90% feature parity with Xamarin by our next release. Our transparent roadmap provides details to keep you updated on our plans.

Thank you, and onward!

From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for choosing Syncfusion during your Xamarin journey.

In conclusion, the end of support for Xamarin underscores the importance of embracing modern frameworks like .NET MAUI. With Syncfusion’s support roadmap and the advantages of .NET MAUI, we hope our developers can navigate this transition smoothly while ensuring their apps’ security, stability, and longevity. Now is the time to embrace the future of cross-platform development and propel your apps to new heights with .NET MAUI and Syncfusion!
