I think it's a bad idea to save state implicitly. Provide an overloaded method to control it.

Our latest version (you will get this when you purchase the product) has this method:
public virtual void SaveTabGroupStates(AppStateSerializer serializer)

which you can both override to alter the default persistence medium or call it directly to save the
state to any particular medium.
