Fill SfAutoComplete data source on demand

Is there a way to fill the SfAutoComplete data source on demand, based on what's being entered? In this specific case, the user enters parts of a name or e-mail-address and then a REST service searches on the server for matching e-mail recipients and returns them to the app. I cannot fetch all in advance, since that can be millions of items.
