We've stayed away of new releases for at least couple of years due to our bad previous experience with SF updates (we still use v5.2 with custom fixes), but I've decided to give new version a try. Below are my first impressions from using the 7.3 version.
Installation went smoothly, and I got to the Dashboard. I've clicked on the first link (WPF demo) and then on the second featured demo (docking).
First of all, I got the annoying "Licensing error" message every time I start the app; when I do "Fix it", it says that the "Licensing changes were made successfully" but that message pops up every time I run a demo, even though the message says "Please note that this is a one-time step" :) I've tried restarting Dashboard, it didn't help.
Next step. I remember we had some problems with serializing docking state in v5.2 that we currently use, so naturally I immediately tried "State Persistence->Save" and then "Load". Boom! "DockingStudio has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.".
OK, next app - "MDI Demo". Again, the "Licensing error" message. Right-click on the "Docking Manager" window, select "Float", the window is floating just fine. However, when you right-click on its header in an attempt to re-dock it, the popup menu immediately disappears. Also, when resizing that window, the speed of rendering is abysmal on my T61 laptop. Also, when you resize that window by dragging either it left or top side, it flickers really badly.
At this point, it appears pretty obvious that the WPF library is not yet ready for serious usage; moving on to WinForms.
From what I've seen on forums, the Diagram has been significantly improved since v5.2, so I go directly to it. I'm interested in layouts, but the sample won't build (log file attached). All other Diagram samples won't build as well.
Now that's enough, I've decided to stop wasting my time on that. Just wondering if this version is supposed to be some kind of beta?build_e3300191.log
