How can I find out (programatically) , if the grid is actually showing a horizontal or vertical scrollbar?
I am using a gridgroupingcontrol.

Try these properties.
Console.WriteLine(this.gridGroupingControl1.TableControl.HScroll);
Console.WriteLine(this.gridGroupingControl1.TableControl.VScroll);
