Can't add controls to pane

I added a SplitContainerAdv control to my form and then tried to add a TextBoxExt control to it. I dragged it from the toolbar and the cursor changed to a circle with a line through it -- not allowed.

I tried it with other controls, too -- both sf and std -- to no avail. It won't let me add a control to either pane.

Is this a bug or maybe a setting I inadvertently set? Or something else I may have done to break it?

It's the most current version of the WinForms library.
