Prevent updating while user attempting to apply filter

I have a background worker that updates the property my grid is bound to.  The update process can fire while the user is attempting to filter the grid causing the filter action to be cancelled.  Is there a method to prevent the datagrid from updating while the user is interacting with the filters?
