Hi Nick,
you could override QueryCoveredRange to calculate covered ranges on demand. If you look at our grouping demo you see there are group headers and group footers with summaries. The way that is implemented is that the GroupingGrid is derived from a regular grid and then QueryCoveredRange and QueryCellInfo is handled to supply covered ranges and cell information on demand.
