Is there a way to provide different icons for toolbar items or menu items for the "classic windows style" and the "xp themes" style or do I have to set 2 imagelists to show the right icon?

Yes, you will have to switch the ImageList and LargeImageList properties of the MainFrameBarManager/ChildFrameBarManager classes with different ImageLists while switching between the 2 styles.
