in the samples that come with Syncfusion, there is code where you are reading and XML file into a dataset. this doesn''t apprear to be used any where in the grid.. is there functionality to bind this grid to this XML, dataset or to the XSD ?

No, that is extraneous code left when some general code was copied from an old sample to new sample. You can comment it out.
