Changing Background Colour on GradientPanel at Runtime

I have a GradientPanel with a label control inside it. The background on the label control is set to System.Drawing.Color.Transparent. The gradient panel is configured with a two colour vertical gradient.

At design time it looks fine. I have a button that changes the BackColor and ForeColor on the GradientPanel, however, rather than changing the gradient it changes the colour of the label text.

Any suggestions please?
