How to Autofill but Keep Starting Suggested Index at 0

I have autofill turned on, but when my users are searching and hit the down arrow, it jumps to the 2nd suggested item. I'd like to keep this starting at zero due to UX reasons - it feels better. Is there a way to keep autofill turned on, then when users hit the down arrow, it starts at index 0 when traversing the suggested items?
