Load child / grandchild data from server via api call in Hierarchy grid

We would like to know if hierarchy grid 

Can retrieve data from server via an api for child data, on expansion of a parent row, and grand child on expansion of a child row.

Yes, by default the Hierarchy Grid request the data for its child only when expand the detail row. This is the intended behavior of Hierarchy Grid. Find the below sample for your reference.
