Excel corruption issue

Hi Experts, Thanks in advance.

So everything was working fine up until now and I was using my Excel to store the data as usual, I believe my wife tried to download some kind of application using the web one fine day and I am pretty sure, my system was attacked with virus as it seemed to process slower. The worst part is now when I try to open my Excel files, a few of them which had a good amount of database starting showing me the error “Excel file unreadable content error”

Anything I can do to make this work? Thank you

Hi Ryuk,

I gather that you have been facing the usual Excel corruption related to “Unreadable content”. After being on many forums and Q & As, I found out that this happens mostly in large sized Excel files or files with complex formulae. Please don’t worry, there are many workarounds to fix this. I am sharing them below:

Workaround 1 : Move the Excel File to a New Folder

Some of the users have reported that they were able to open their Excel file, following the ‘Excel unreadable content’ error, by simply moving the file to a different folder. I hope this works for you as well.

Workaround 2: Install Visual Basic Component

At times, it is found that installing the 'Visual Basic' component of MS Office 2010 resolves error message. To do so, follow these steps:

  • Go to Control Panel >> Programs >> select Microsoft Office 2010.
  • Tap Change, and then select Add or Remove Programs.
  • Next, click the “ + “ sign provided next to Office Shared Features.
  • Click Visual Basic for Applications. After that, right-click and choose Run from My Computer, and hit the Continue button.
  • Reboot your system when this process finishes.
  • Now check if the issue has been resolved or not.

I hope this works out for you. Cheers!

Hi Luffy,

Thanks man, I followed the steps tip to toe, I was able to recover most of my data. Although is this trick limited??????? Some of the files which used complex formulae are still showing this error.

Is there anything that can be done for that??

Hi Ryuk,

It was my pleasure helping you, I faced the same issue although it was for earlier version of MS Excel. I am sad to know that all the files were not regained. Here is the alternate option which you can try, you can check out this thread.

When opening an Excel spreadsheet in MS Office 2010/2007, you may get the following error message:

"Excel found unreadable content in '[filename].xlsx'. Do you want to recover the contents of this workbook? If you trust the source of this workbook, click Yes."

Well, when you move forward, you can experience the following scenarios.

Scenario 1: "Excel was able to open the file by repairing or removing the unreadable content.

Note: The message clearly states that your Excel file might open, but images may be lost and other such inconsistencies can crop up.

Scenario 2: The error is followed by another error message, like “The file is corrupt and cannot be opened”.

Corruption could occur in different scenarios, like a virus attack, power surge, a network glitch, copying and pasting corrupted data from another file, etc. And there is not anyone permanent solution to fix the ‘Excel found unreadable content error.

But, One of the workaround you can try to resolve this error.

Workaround: Use “read-only” mode to fix the “Excel found unreadable content” error.

Try to open your '.xlsx' file by making it 'read-only'. Follow these steps:

  • In Excel, click ‘File’ from the main menu.

  • Select 'Save' for a new document or 'Save As' for a previously saved document in the screen that appears.

  • From the ‘Save As’ dialog box, click Tools > General Options.

  • Click on the ‘Read-only recommended’ checkbox to make the document read-only and then click ‘OK’.

  • Now open a new '.xlsx' file and copy everything from the corrupt Excel file to this new file. Finally, save this file and try to open it again.
