autocomplete returns "no records found" after previous search

Question

i have an autocomplete that uses a webapi adaptor and when i type in some test, it shows a list of results. if i click off of the results list and the list closes, when i select the previous typed text, delete it, then start typing more text, then from that point forward i get "no records found" and it won't work again unless i refresh the page.
