Switching swim lanes on / off

I need to allow users to change the configuration of a Kanban board, this will include switching swim lanes on / off. What is the best way of doing this? I've tried changing the model and executing a refresh(true) to update the template and the data, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I have figured out how to do this, simply set the fields, swimlaneKey property to a column name, or null to get rid of swim lanes.
