DOCX in OpenOffice

It seems DOCX or DOC file generated by Syncfusion cannot be opened by OpenOffice. They can be opened by MS Word.

I am wondering if this is because there is an error in the DOCX output that MS Word is tolerant of, but OpenOffice is not.

If I use MS Word to open a generated DOCX and then save it as a different filename I get a message saying Office is upgrading it to the latest version. After that OpenOffice is able to open the document. Did MS Word correct something when it opened and resaved?

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your interest in Syncfusion products.

Essential DocIO writes the Word document (Doc and Docx format) as per the Microsoft file format specification and the generated documents are opened properly in all the MS Word versions. Currently DocIO doesn’t have support for Open office documents. Please refer below UG documentation link for more details on DocIO compatibility.

We have logged this as a feature request in our database. We will implement this feature in any of our upcoming releases. We usually have an interval of at least three months between releases. The feature implementation would also greatly depend on the factors such as product design, code compatibility and complexity. We will update you when this feature has been implemented. You can track the status of this feature through our feature management system.

When you open the DocIO generated Word document and resave it through MS Word, it will add some additional document level information which will convert the Word document to open office compatible. So kindly resave your DocIO generated word document through MS Word in order to open that in Open office.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Regards,

Sathish

I have no need of the OpenOffice file format specifically. What I was hoping was that DOCX files generated by Syncfusion could be opened not just by Word but by the free Microsoft Office Viewer application and by OpenOffice.

It looks as though Syncfusion will generate DOCX files that can only be opened by MS Word. For anything else the file has to be opened and resaved by Word. I am afraid that is not a viable solution for me.

Your link for the feature request doesn't work. So can you tell me whether this feature request is to modify the DOCX export so that it is more portable?

Hi Richard,

Thank you for your update.

Essential DocIO checks the compatibility for MS Word 97, MS Word 2003, MS Word 2007, MS Word 2010 and MS Word 2013 documents. But not checks the compatibility for open office file format documents.

Please refer below UG documentation link for more details on DocIO compatibility.

DocIO doesn’t support for Open office file format. We have already logged this requirement as a feature request. The feature implementation would greatly depend upon the factors like product design, code complexity and compatibility. We do not have any immediate plan to implement this feature. We will let you know once this feature have been implemented.

You can track the status of this feature through our feature management system.
