Change position of merge field

Is there a way to reposition individual merge fields via the MailMerge.MergeField event handler?

I have a template document with various merge fields inside their own text boxes. Some merge records will have an image associated with them while others will not. During the merge, I want to shift some of my merge fields to the left to occupy the space where the image was, if the current record doesn't have an image associated with it.
