Grid / MVC - GridEditMode.Normal - column alignment issue

When I have GridEditMode set to Normal and I go to insert a row, all the columns in the insert are not aligned with everything else in the table. When I edit a row, the columns are aligned.

When I am doing an edit, my controller returns the record being edited. When I do an insert, there is no record to return so it returns an empty collection.
