Syncfusion Releases Metro Icon Package

Over 600 icons given at no cost to development community

RTP, N.C. – March 05, 2012 – In conjunction with the release of Microsoft® Windows 8® Consumer Preview, Syncfusion, a worldwide provider of controls for Windows® development, has released Metro Studio 1™—a suite of more than 600 vector-based Metro icons that are easy to customize and free to use.

The recent release of Windows 8 Consumer Preview includes Microsoft’s Metro theming for applications, promising to give end users a fresh perspective on interfaces that have a simpler, more intuitive design. The Windows 8 preview also allows developers to start building and testing Metro applications and experiment with the Windows Store.

Syncfusion’s Metro Studio 1, the only utility of its kind for Windows 8 development, allows developers to do the following:

  • Include Metro-style icons in applications at no charge.
  • Modify Metro icons as desired.
  • Quickly deploy test Metro applications in the Windows 8 Preview.

Icons in Metro Studio 1 have been designed in accordance with Microsoft’s guidelines for Metro user interfaces. The 600-plus icon suite contains images targeted to multiple industries—finance, healthcare, etc.—as well as general icons essential to all applications. Users of Metro Studio 1 can access icons through an intuitive interface that allows icon color and size to be customized. Since all icons are vector based, such modifications are easy, and output to various formats, including XAML, is quick. An icon package of this scope, with rights to distribute in applications, could normally sell for around $500. Syncfusion, however, gives the suite away free.

"We strongly feel that this is an important package; we want to put it out there for the community to use,” says Daniel Jebaraj, Syncfusion’s vice president of product development.

“When you're starting to develop Metro applications, you have to visually differentiate them. You need to have the right kind of Metro images to spruce up your app, and Metro Studio 1 will help you to do that,” says Jebaraj.

In designing Metro Studio 1, Syncfusion felt it was imperative to provide it at no cost to the development community so applications could be quickly deployed and tested without calling on a graphic designer. By expediting application development, Metro applications are more likely to be ready and stable by the time the final version of Windows 8 is released.
