How to synchronize users and groups from the Active Directory to the Report Server?

2 mins read

Active Directory Synchronization process has been introduced to keep the users and groups details of the Report Server up to date with the Active Directory users and groups.

What is Active Directory synchronization?

Active Directory synchronization is a process used to synchronize the details of users or groups in Report Server with the Active Directory. This can be done on-demand or on a scheduled time. Using this, the details of users or groups in the Report Server will be same as that of the details in Active Directory. The two types of synchronization are:

  • User synchronization
  • Group synchronization

Note: This can be performed for users or groups imported from Active Directory.

User synchronization

The following details are synchronized after the user synchronization:

  • Username
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Email Address
  • Contact Number with the Active Directory Server

This process will delete the user, if the user has been deleted from the Active Directory Server.

Group synchronization

The following details are synchronized after the group synchronization:

  • Group name
  • Description from the Active Directory Server

  • This process will delete the group, if the group has been deleted from the Active Directory Server.
  • This process will delete the user from Report Server group, if the user has been deleted from Active Directory Server group.
  • This process will add a user into the Report Server group if a new user is added into the Active Directory group. If the new user is not present in the Report Server, then a new user account will be created in the Report Server and will be added into the group.

Follow the given steps to synchronize the imported user and group with the Active Directory Server.

Step 1: To configure Active Directory settings, go to administration/user-directory-settings.

Refer to the following help documentation link for further details.

Step 2: Import the users or groups into Report server, go to administration/user-management. Click the button “NewUser” from the dropdown, and “Import from Active Directory”. It will redirect you into AD import page.

To import AD user into Report Server, refer to the following help documentation link.

Step 3: After the users and groups are imported into Report Server, go to administration/user-management. Clicking the button named “Synchronization” will redirect you to the AD Synchronization page.

In Report Server, this Active Directory synchronization can be done in two ways:

  1. On-demand synchronization
  2. Scheduled synchronization

Step 3.1: On-demand synchronization process

To synchronize Active Directory users, refer to the following help documentation link.

https://help.syncfusion..com/Report-platform/Report-server/administration/synchronization-active-directory-users

To synchronize Active Directory groups, please refer the below help documentation link.

Step 3.2: Scheduled synchronization process

The scheduled synchronization process of an Active Directory will synchronize both the users and groups imported from the Active Directory.

Refer to the following help documentation link for further details.

https://help.syncfusion.com/Report-platform/Report-server/site-settings/active-directory-synchronization-schedule

All the users and groups imported from the Active Directory has been updated without importing data from the Active Directory.
