How to create Excel stacked line with markers chart in C#, VB.NET?

Platform: WinForms |
Control: XlsIO |
Published Date: January 31, 2018 |

This article explains how to create a stacked line with markers chart in Excel using Syncfusion Excel (XlsIO) library.

What is stacked line with markers chart?

A stacked line chart displays series as a set of points connected by a line. Values are represented on the y-axis and categories are displayed on the x-axis.

What are markers?

Markers are circles, squares, triangles, or other shapes which mark the data points. Excel displays a unique marker with different shape or color for each data series. Syncfusion Excel (XlsIO) library supports all the marker types present in Excel.

Stacked Line With Markers Chart

To create a stacked line with markers chart in Excel using XlsIO, you need to do the following steps.

Steps to create stacked line with markers chart:

Step 1: Initialize chart

Create a chart object by calling the worksheet.Charts.Add method and specify the chart type to ExcelChartType.Line_Markers_Stacked enum value.

C#

            //Create the chart
            IChartShape chart = worksheet.Charts.Add();

            //Set chart type to Line_Markers_Stacked
            chart.ChartType = ExcelChartType.Line_Markers_Stacked;

Step 2: Assign data

Set a range of data from the worksheet to chart’s DataRange property. To plot the series values in column and categories in row, set chart’s IsSeriesInRows property to false.

C#

            //Set region of Chart data
            chart.DataRange = worksheet["A1:D6"];

            //Set chart series in column for assigned data region
            chart.IsSeriesInRows = false;

Step 3: Apply basic chart elements

Add the basic elements like chart title, legend and datalables.

  • ChartTitle of chart object.
  • Set DataLabels via DefaultDataPoint.
  • Set TRUE to chart’s HasLegend property, to show the legend.

C#

              //Apply chart elements
              //Set Chart Title
              chart.ChartTitle = "Stacked Line With Markers Chart";

              //Set Datalabels
              IChartSerie serie1 = chart.Series[0];
              serie1.DataPoints.DefaultDataPoint.DataLabels.IsValue = true;
              serie1.DataPoints.DefaultDataPoint.DataLabels.Position = ExcelDataLabelPosition.Left;

              //Set Legend
              chart.HasLegend = true;
              chart.Legend.Position = ExcelLegendPosition.Bottom;

Properties used to modify the markers in the line charts

Below is the list of properties that are used to change the markers in line charts.

  1. MarkerBackgroundColor (or) MarkerBackgroundColorIndex
  2. MarkerForegroundColor (or) MarkerForegroundColorIndex
  3. MarkerSize
  4. MarkerStyle
  5. IsAutoMarker
Note:

As line charts don’t have any interior settings, applying fill properties in line chart series might throw exception.
