Why does Bold Reports On-Premise Edition require SQL Server and IIS?

What is SQL Server and IIS used for in the On-Premise edition? 

We will be using the reports in an ASP .Net Core environment without access to SQL Server and IIS. We use Postgres for our db. The reports will be embedded in our application.

Could you please confirm whether you are going to embed the reports from Bold Reports Report Server in your .Net Core application? It will be helpful for us to provide the details based on your requirement.
