SfToolbar - Persist Selected Item Highlight When Toolbar loses focus

I often use a Toolbar as the main navigation bar for an application.  If I select a toolbar item, it receives a highlight and my page changes.  However, if I navigate away from the Toolbar, I lose the highlight of the item that I selected. (see attached video)

I would like to have the option to persist the selected item highlight when the toolbar loses focus.
