MenuAdv background does not respond to theme changes

I've found a way to have the MenuAdv background color update correctly when the theme changes, but only at expense of the control layout.  I'm looking for a better way.

The attached zipfile contains a fully functional project with two menubars.  One exhibits the background failing to change due to the presence of a style in its DataTemplate, and the other exhibits the background changing correctly, but the layout becoming wrong.  I'm hoping for either confirmation that this problem has no solution, or (much more preferably) a tip on how to tweak the xaml to make one of these two alternatives function as desired.
