Filter Status Bar

Do you have to have paging enable in order to show the filter status bar? I would like to not having paging, or possibly use virtual rows, but still have a status bar with the current filter (and the option to clear it out with an "x" at the end, or to respond to events such as click to edit it) without having a pager control.
