SelectAsync(int index) Method is not working

I have a Tab control bound to a collection and I need to be able to programmatically set the selected tab.  I tried using SelectAsync(index), but this doesn't work to set the tab.  If I use SelectedItem = index, this works, but I get a compiler warning that this property should not be set outside of the component.  How can I set the selected tab?
