DropDownList fails when using combination of value and itemTemplate Completed

Reproduction Steps:

Open the minimal example at https://stackblitz.com/edit/angular-ucgoat. It demonstrates the combined usage of value and itemTemplate.
Check out the console output.

Expected:

The dropdown should be initialized with "TENNIS".

Actual:

The following error is thrown:

ERROR
Error: ExpressionChangedAfterItHasBeenCheckedError: Expression has changed after it was checked. Previous value: 'null: undefined'. Current value: 'null: SNOOKER'. It seems like the view has been created after its parent and its children have been dirty checked. Has it been created in a change detection hook ?
