Empty points rendered as 'gapped' in v16.x but rendering as both 'gapped' AND averaged in v17.x

Open attached HTML file, explanation provided within; i.e. different versions of ejChart render empty points differently, even when the Chart(s) are instantiated with exactly the same options - I strongly prefer the old behaviour and wonder how to reproduce it with the latest version?
