# Microsoft and Others Aim to Improve Data Portability

The [Data Transfer Project](https://datatransferproject.dev/)
 has officially launched! Announced last year as a collaboration between Facebook, Twitter, Google, and Microsoft, the Data Transfer Project is an open-source effort to improve data portability by providing a single method to carry data from one service or app to another.

With data becoming perhaps the most valuable resource for software developers and multiplatform development becoming a near-mandatory consideration, moving data sets to the many services that enable modern development has become a significant challenge. It’s not simply that moving data is an arduous task—and it can be a challenge in and of itself—but that maintaining the security of large data sets as they are shifted across services is fraught with peril.

The Data Transfer Project aims to solve these problems by establishing standards on both sides of data transfers. Importantly, this means that security solutions should be identical before and after moving data across services. It also means that users should find similar accessibility and usability regardless of how many times they move data; while different services may have different features and advantages, there should be no sacrifices in the basic user experience when making those choices.
