Dennis Ritchie: the passing of another pioneer

As the technical world mourns the passing of Steve Jobs, we in the development community are also saddened to note that another towering personality in software innovation passed away this week—Dennis Ritchie, creator of C and a major contributor to Unix.

There is perhaps not a developer in the world who has not been touched by Dennis’ work in one way or another. Like many developers, many of us at Syncfusion started programming using C. We have fond memories of the power we first felt working directly with computers using the C language. Over the years, operating systems have added several abstraction layers, but there is nothing quite like the feeling of being able to experiment with very little to protect us from errors.

As we know, modern languages such as C++, C#, and Java owe many of their ideas and core syntax to the C language. At Syncfusion, we love what we do and are thankful for the opportunity to work on products that help software developers implement their ideas.

It is in that spirit of innovation that Dennis Ritchie has always been an inspiration.

We will be celebrating Dennis’ legacy by reading his classic work, C Programming Language, yet again. You can find it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Programming-Language-2nd-Brian-Kernighan/dp/0131103628.
